MJ’s Ideas

We took Cameron to the inn. Nora sat with Cameron while Cameron called Bev. Meanwhile, I got MJ up to speed. Unfortunately, the man had his own thoughts on what the next steps should be.

He unceremoniously marched me to his office, leaving Nora and Cameron out at the bar. It made me feel like I was a misbehaving elementary schooler the way he pushed his office door open and motioned me in with a flick of his finger. Once we were inside, he had the audacity to point imperiously at an armchair.

I folded my arms across my chest and stood where I was.

With a sigh that sounded a lot more like a growl, he jerked his entire arm at the chair. I thought about refusing again but I'd seen the man in his werewolf form.

Annoyed, I trudged to the chair and settled into it.

Instead of speaking, MJ paced in front of me for a good ninety seconds before demanding, "What are you thinking?"

I blinked.

"Answer me. What are you thinking? Have you lost all sense? You're running around after Selene's friends, questioning them, when two of their group are dead. Then you have the effrontery to deposit one of them on me and tell me to keep an eye on her while you round up the others. What do I look like to you? A babysitter? I am the head of the wolves, pack leader, alpha." He growled the last word.

"Well...no, you don't look like a babysitter. Obviously. But you're going to be here at the inn anyway. And you're the one who told me I have to get more involved in things. That something is coming, and I need to play my part. I just thought that you could--"

He stared at me as though I were a newly discovered ant that he'd very much like to crush.

"That I could what? Babysit while you run off and try to find Harlow?" He laughed, but I could tell it wasn't because he thought any of this was funny. I'd actually never seen a person look less amused. "No, Zoey. That's not how this is going to go."

"How many dead bodies have you taken me to see? Now you're concerned about my well-being? You're here at work. I don't see how you plan to stop me."

He growled. "Don't test my patience."

"Don't test my patience."

I stood. "I'm not one of your pack, MJ. I don't have to obey your orders."

Again with the growl, then he took a deep breath and released it slowly. He walked to his desk and sat in the chair. "You're right. You're not part of my pack." He paused, stared at me long enough to make me squirm. "I have no right to tell you what to do. But I'm asking you. You can't look for Harlow by yourself. It's too dangerous."

I didn't point out that he hadn't actually asked, he'd issued another command. "There's no one to go with me. Also, it's daytime. I wouldn't go if it were nighttime.
